Bujtor István Film Festival Starts Today in Balatonszemes

This year’s Bujtor István Film Festival starts on Thursday, and on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the birth of the Balázs Béla award-winning actor, film director, screenwriter and producer, eighty films will be shown in four days in Balatonszemes.


According to the announcement of the organizer Latinovits Memorial Foundation on Wednesday, András Kern, the Bujtor family and Károly Frenreisz will also be present at the festival’s opening ceremony. During the festival, the Ötvös Csöpi model exhibition awaits visitors with the masterpieces of Gábor Pál, among other things, the original sculptures of A pogány Madonna and Hamis a baba will be on display.

On the opening day, A pogány Madonna from István Bujtor’s films will be screened, the next day the James Bond parody Az oroszlán ugrani készül, and on August 20th the film A három testőr Afrikában, based on the novel by Jenő Rejtő.

During the day, the competition film program is shown, which selects from Hungarian films of the past year and a half. Of the 147 nominated works, 104 films were included in the competition program: 40 feature films and experimental fiction works, 34 documentaries, informative and portrait films, 4 animated works and 26 poetry films. Films competing for the István Bujtor Award include Gábor Herendi’s Toxikoma, Imposztor starring Pál Mácsai and Róbert Alföldi, Korai menyegző directed by Tamás Olt and Csaba Vékes, or the short film Rianás, which won awards at several foreign festivals.

In the documentary section, visitors can watch, for example, Gergely Szűcs’ Nem a méret a lényeg, avagy 150 cm alatt and Máté Kőrösi’s Dívák, as well as Ágoston Erhardt’s 17 állomás – a feltámadás keresztútjawhich presents the maker of the Way of the Cross in Lourdes, Mária Faykod, born in Balatonfüred, who now lives in France.

There are several Pilinszky adaptations among the poetry films, but films have also been made from the works of contemporary poets – Dénes Krusovszky, Lajos Parti Nagy, János Lackfi, Petra Finy.

The István Bujtor Award is awarded by category. The president of the professional jury is filmmaker Gábor Ferenczi, screenwriter, members are Natasa Stork, laureate of the 2021 Berlinale Shooting Stars program, filmmaker József Kalász, artistic director of the First Hungarian Theater and Imre Lutter is the festival director who is a festival director, performer, producer, chairman of the board of trustees of the Latinovits Memorial Foundation.
