A man was sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment on Monday for killing a student of the University of Debrecen in 2004.

At first, the sentence was 12 years of imprisonment, however it was reduced to 10 years because of the followings: the defendant did not intend to kill the victim and he did not show dangerous behavior during the last 12 years – said the judge of the Debrecen Regional Court of Appeal.

In 2004 the defendant and the victim, who was a law student of the University of Debrecen, were leaving a bar around 3 am; they started to argue on something but nothing else had happened. Later that night, they met again at the Frog Pond and the defendant hit the student on the face with a beer bottle. The victim tried to escape but the defendant had caught him and beat him several times on his face.

After the beating, the defendant had left the crime scene. Three days later the student died in hospital.

The defendant has left the country when he heard about the death of his victim. Eventually he was caught in France on 8 November 2013 and he was transported to Hungary on 28 November.

The sentence that was pronounced on Monday 25 April 2016 is legally binding.
