DEL makes history with WAS

University

Pentecost weekend was especially busy for the Department of English Linguistics (DEL) at the Institute of English and American Studies at the University of Debrecen, which hosted the Workshop on Argument Structure (WAS). The event was the first of its kind at DEL with 21 presenters representing 14 countries from 3 continents.

The workshop featured four invited talks by such distinguished speakers as John Beavers (The University of Texas at Austin), É. Kiss Katalin (Hungarian Academy of Sciences and Pázmány Péter Catholic University), Louisa Sadler (University of Essex), and Surányi Balázs (Hungarian Academy of Sciences and Pázmány Péter Catholic University), who certainly contributed to the prestige of the event. The workshop was primarily aimed at providing an opportunity to discuss argument structure phenomena in a great variety of languages such as English, Hungarian, Maltese, Pazar Laz, Persian, Polish, Russian, colloquial Sinhala, and Spanish.

In addition to the talks, the workshop program also included wine tasting and a hearty dinner in the beautiful Tokaj wine region, where participants were not only given the chance to gain a real insight into Hungarian wine culture, but they could also network with colleagues from all over the world in a more leisurely environment.

Seeing the success of the event, the organizers, Tibor Laczkó, György Rákosi and Éva Kardos, have already announced their plans for hosting WAS 2 in 2014.
